Sorry for the cringe inducing post about video-games again, but it's something on my mind ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The year is 2007. I had curly afro-like hair, and I weighed about 115 lbs standing at 6 foot.
As you would guess, I was awkward and shy.
Now that you have context of who I was 12 years ago, I'll get to the meat of the story.
Every week or so the entire school (mostly the boys) would meet in the theatre room to play the hottest game of the year....
Excuse the potato quality, it was uploaded in 2007
For some odd reason, rhythm games had become a huge hit. Games like Dance Dance Revolution, and it's online, flash equivalent Tap Tap Revolution were being played by everyone. Guitar Hero had already been released, but it wasn't until Two that everyone really jumped on board. We played this game projected in the school theatre room for what seemed like every day, guitar-battling instead of eating lunch.
...And then Three came out, and we all bought that to sustain our love of rhythm games. Then Rock Band caught on and said "Why don't we add drums and singing?". Again, I don't remember anyone playing the first one (which had a stellar tracklist), but Rock Band 2 - released in 2008 - caught like wildfire. Many kick pedals were broken.
And then it was all... kind of just over.
Harmonix (who developed Guitar Hero I+II... then jumped ship to develop further RockBand titles with MTV Games) and Activision competed for years to top each-other in the genre. It all got very stale, and by the time I hit College no one cared about rhythm games anymore. Well, except for a few diehard fans who still wanted to prove themselves by beating titles like Through the Fire and Flames by Dragonforce.
What I wanted to really get at is I'm still playing this game.
Clearly, people aren't in the market for buying new instruments, and I'll say that confidently because you MUST buy the drums bundled with RockBand (upwards of $400). That's frustrating, considering having all of the instruments is part of the fun.
I sink about $10 a week into buying tracks for this game, and, spoiler alert, none of my guitars work properly, and a friend broke my kick pedal. I also sink a lot of time into finding new controllers that actually work.
If you have any spare controllers...
Can I please have them?
